I'm Kathy, I teach Latin at a Classical Christian School, I have 4 kids including a daughter with Down syndrome, and I knit and quilt obsessively whenever I get a chance. I took Latin in high school and had 4 teachers in 3 years. The first teacher had a deep southern accent, so we didn't learn the correct pronunciation until the second year!
I have never studied a foreign language. Both my kids did Spanish and French. I am hoping to make summer pajama bottoms for my little buddy yet this week.

I went to school when Latin was the mandatory foreign language for the college prep kids. It was so, so hard and I barely passed with a D. So many parts of Latin went past my understanding but I did learn about the roots of English words and how to begin to understand the meanings of some unknown words because of knowing the meaning of the Latin roots. After 2 years of Latin I took 2 years of Spanish, taught by the same teacher. I'm sure she had no hope for my language skills but the Latin had been a good basis for Spanish and I won some state competitions in Spanish those last 2 years.

I have some many "next" projects I stopped adding to the list. Right now I'm focusing on the current quilt (my first). It's a scrappy postage stamp quilt (using 2.5 inchers) so your giveaway is right up my alley!
Latin was never an option at my school... but my DH and often talk to each other using the German names & phrases we learned in school 4 hours apart before we ever met. We HAD to have used the same books!~

My daughter took Latin last year in 5th grade. She loved it and wished she could continue with it. We moved so she had to give it up. Not a whole lot of schools have an option for Latin. She thought is was so fun.

I did latin gcse and i remember vividly stories of Quintus and his sister Flavia. I also had an amazing latin master who used to read us Winnie the Pooh in Latin, complete with different voices.
I have to admit I've bought the Gruffalo in Latin so that i can share it with my children when they are older.

I remember Catholic masses in Latin, except I didn't know that was the language being spoken until I was much, much older. The first time I heard a Latin mass, I thought I had gone into another world.

I wish I had been able to take Latin... the only Latin I know comes from a bit of dictionary reading, and songs from an anime called NOIR.

The extent of my Latin knowledge is Carpe diem which I confess I only know because of the Robin William's film Dead Poets Society. It is not common in Australia to study Latin as part of schooling.
The only Latin I hear is the scientific name of plants and trees (my hubs is a landscaper)! :)

Unfortunately, I have forgotten much of what I learned, but I remember the Latin "insults", like Tacete caudex, caprimulgus & rurus. I was JUST thinking about Latin this morning, I kid you not. I took 3 years of Latin in highschool, belonged to the Latin club (sigh) and I still use my knowledge to figure out words I don't know the meaning of right away. I have never studied Latin but picked up bits of it along the way since I studied history. One day I was using a Catholic missal as a resource for a paper and I had gotten through a page and a half of the service before I stumbled over a word. At that point I realized that I was in the Latin section and wondered how I hadn't noticed I was reading Latin instead of English. Thanks for a great giveaway.

I never took Latin, but I did do an etymology course, which had a fair bit of Latin in it. Quite interesting! I read in MacLean's magazine this week that Latin is the new up and coming hot thing. Celebrities and J.K. Rowling use it, looks good on resumes - there's even social media in Latin now!

How embarrassing - I took 2 years of Latin in high school. Do you think I can remember any of it?! I do think it helped my spelling and vocabulary though.
I actually took Latin for four years in high school. I learned tons the first year, then got a different teacher and didn't learn as much :(. It has been helpful in life in general, though.
I took 2 years of Latin in high school. I must have been nuts.. the most I can remember is agricola, agricolae, agricola, agricolarum, agricola... I used to be able to say "my dog ate my homework" but I forgot... something canis... lol.
I like the way you roll, Kathy - are we related? My best memories of HS were Latin. Learning carols in Latin and singing them in the school halls. A young card of a classmate who first told me [from the seat behind me in class] that my eyes were like limpid pools of toilet water... which of course is what any brown-eyed girl wants to hear, but he was being silly not rude. We had a lot of fun in that class, and I learned more about Enlish in there than I ever did in English class. I went on to take two more semesters of Latin in college, for fun. It wasn't nearly as much fun though - everybody was too serious. And it's not easy to find classic authors who specialized in wit and humor.
I really want to finish the binding on a quilt and finally throw it in the wash but I'm so lazy today...
I don't have a Christmas quilt - and I'd like to make one for this next year.
