It's a great time of year to be a craft blogger -- the Sew Mama Sew giveaway day has rolled around again! It's more like a whole week of giveaways because it's so popular. I'm Kathy, I teach Latin at a Classical Christian School, I have 4 kids including a daughter with Down syndrome, and I knit and quilt obsessively whenever I get a chance. I blog about all of these things and more, but probably mostly about quilting. I especially love scrappy quilts with a lot of different fabrics. ReplyDeleteI took Latin in high school and had 4 teachers in 3 years. The first teacher had a deep southern accent, so we didn't learn the correct pronunciation until the second year!

I went to school when Latin was the mandatory foreign language for the college prep kids. It was so, so hard and I barely passed with a D. So many parts of Latin went past my understanding but I did learn about the roots of English words and how to begin to understand the meanings of some unknown words because of knowing the meaning of the Latin roots. After 2 years of Latin I took 2 years of Spanish, taught by the same teacher. I'm sure she had no hope for my language skills but the Latin had been a good basis for Spanish and I won some state competitions in Spanish those last 2 years.

ReplyDeleteThe extent of my Latin knowledge is Carpe diem which I confess I only know because of the Robin William's film Dead Poets Society. It is not common in Australia to study Latin as part of schooling.

Unfortunately, I have forgotten much of what I learned, but I remember the Latin "insults", like Tacete caudex, caprimulgus & rurus. I also committed to memory the Latin dialogue from Braveheart, "Homo endomitus est et sepidicet mendacio. Ego nunquam pronunciare mendacio, sed ego sum homo endomitus." Vini, Vidi, Vici. I was JUST thinking about Latin this morning, I kid you not. I took 3 years of Latin in highschool, belonged to the Latin club (sigh) and I still use my knowledge to figure out words I don't know the meaning of right away. ReplyDeleteI have never studied Latin but picked up bits of it along the way since I studied history. One day I was using a Catholic missal as a resource for a paper and I had gotten through a page and a half of the service before I stumbled over a word. At that point I realized that I was in the Latin section and wondered how I hadn't noticed I was reading Latin instead of English. Thanks for a great giveaway.

ReplyDeleteI never took Latin, but I did do an etymology course, which had a fair bit of Latin in it. Quite interesting! I read in MacLean's magazine this week that Latin is the new up and coming hot thing. Celebrities and J.K. Rowling use it, looks good on resumes - there's even social media in Latin now!

ReplyDeleteI actually took Latin for four years in high school. I learned tons the first year, then got a different teacher and didn't learn as much :(. It has been helpful in life in general, though.
ReplyDeleteI took 2 years of Latin in high school. I must have been nuts.. the most I can remember is agricola, agricolae, agricola, agricolarum, agricola... I used to be able to say "my dog ate my homework" but I forgot... something canis... lol.
ReplyDeleteI like the way you roll, Kathy - are we related? My best memories of HS were Latin. Learning carols in Latin and singing them in the school halls. A young card of a classmate who first told me [from the seat behind me in class] that my eyes were like limpid pools of toilet water... which of course is what any brown-eyed girl wants to hear, but he was being silly not rude. We had a lot of fun in that class, and I learned more about Enlish in there than I ever did in English class. I went on to take two more semesters of Latin in college, for fun. It wasn't nearly as much fun though - everybody was too serious. And it's not easy to find classic authors who specialized in wit and humor.
